How I make money…on Twitter

As you probably know if you’re reading this blog from the start, my startegy to make money online is to multiply income sources the most I can. I got some blogs and websites, I’m a domainer and an affiliate marketer.
But as Twitter became more and more popular, many people, me inclued, saw how they can use it to make money online. In this article, I’m going to show you how I make money online using Twitter, and how you can do the same.

Promoting your blog and driving traffic

This is obviously the easiest and more logical way of making money using Twitter. Have you seen the green and gray button “X tweets” just below the title? When a twitter user clicks on it, it will automatically post a link to my post on their Twitter timeline. When a post is interesting, followers of the first person who tweeted my post will retweet it, and so on.

When you get retweeted by popular tweeter accounts (Some have more than 20000 followers) at an hour of the day where many people are behind their computers, results can be extremely great.

As you can see on the screenshot below, taken from Cats Who Code statistics, Twitter is one of my top sources of traffic.

Some of my Cats Who Code posts are retweeted up to 700 times. How it is possible?
First, I use a Tweetmeme button which allow my readers to share my posts quickly and easily. The easier retweeting is for your visitors, the more they will retweet.
Secondly, I often ask my followers to RT my posts. Some people may not agree on that one, but personally, I have no problem when someone ask for RTs because I’m still free to do it or not. The two remaining “techniques” I use are to get as many followers as possible (assuming they’re interested in my tweets, otherwise they scrictly don’t have any value) and to have lots of friends like I explained in this previous post.

Making money on Twitter directly

Here we go: Lots of people are using Twitter to drive traffic to their blog posts, but just a few are making money directly on twitter, without even having a blog or website of anykind.

The only things you need are Twitter and Paypal accounts. Follow people who sell products such as WordPress themes, ebooks, etc. When they tweet about one of their products, simply retweet them. Of course, don’t forget to change the url used in the original tweet by your own affiliate url, so you’ll make the comission for the traffic you drove.

Easy, isn’t it? The only thing you have to do is to get followers that are interested in the kind of products you’re tweeting about. A twitter account should be focused on a particular niche if you want to make money with it.

I thought you’d be sharing the usual tip of tweeting about products with your affiliate links. But I have to say you’re method is really smart, not to mention ingenious Jean ;)

I shall be experimenting with this.

You should! Depending on your number of follower/their interest for the products you tweet about/the time of the day when you tweet, it can bring a lot more money than you may think.
But that’s not the kind of tip most bloggers like to share ;)

Interesting. Had no idea about making money directly through affiliate links – makes sense and is something I might look into sometime.
    Great insight, thanks for this!

This looks interesting. But I don’t know anything about making affiliate links. I tried to use Google to find some help with making one, but I didn’t just find anything…

Well, I’m just so beginner with making money. Where could I find some help/articles/etc. to make my own affiliate url with PayPal?

Yeah — i also think about this clever method. Instead to post sponsored twitting, we can promote our affiliate link trough it.

@ Koiranpentu: Nothing hard. Follow this simple procedure:

1 – Go on the site, for example: WpWebHost
2 – Look for the link named “Affiliates” which is generally placed on the site footer
3 – Click on it and follow the instructions. Each site have a different way to handle affiliates (This could be an interesting read for you)
4 – Once you registered for an account, you’ll get an url. This is your affiliate url, and you’re ready to make money!

This is an excellent post. Alot of designers/developers wonder how they can profit off of their social media. While no clear handbook exists, this is a wonderful example.

@AP: Tweet about interesting things, you’ll be retweeted and named in followfridays. That’d be a good start I think :)

I registered to the affiliate page in WpWebHost and now they have approved my account. How do I use this method to earn money there? Do I use “Build & Track Your Own Links” there?

Sorry, I’m just so beginner that I don’t really know what to do.

Best way, build some tools with Twitter API for sales. Or include your affiliate links on your posts with some of your tweets, just don’t overdo it or people following you will get annoyed and stop following you altogether! I think it’s best to direct people to an actual website through Twitter rather than trying to pump affiliate links through Twitter.
