There was a time where WordPress theme where just a simple, unaesthetic articles list. Now, theme developers are using all the power of WordPress to create stunning, easy to use and powerful Theme frameworks.
I previously talked about the Thesis theme on this blog, now let’s turn our focus to Thesis main competitor, a very powerful and complete theme framework called Headway.
First impressions
I first heard about Headway a while ago, but didn’t pay attention, don’t ask me why. Then, some days ago someone mentioned Headway in comment left under my “10 hacks for Thesis” post, asking which theme, between Thesis and Headway, was the best.I decided to give a try to Headway as soon as I can. Lucky me, a friend just bought the theme so I visited him and tried it on his computer.
By default, Headway looks simple but very clean, which made me remember about Thesis default look and feel.
To be honest, Headway default look and feel didn’t impressed me that much. Sure, the default look isn’t horrible, but for $87, I expected much more than black text on white background.
But Headway isn’t a premium theme as such as those released by Woothemes or ElegantThemes. Headway is a theme framework, which means that it have been created to be customizable and extensible. Headway has been made for you to create your own blog theme, not to be used out of the box, even this is possible, of course.
Once customized, Headway can definitely look great. For example, Headway site is made…using Headway! Click here to see by yourself.
Headway theme built-in options
The Headway theme is not just a simple WordPress theme, it’s a framework. So, lots of options as such as layout editor are available for you to customize.
After playing a bit with the theme, I was amazed to see that without any coding, I was able to transform the look and feel of my theme.
Layout editor
Headway features an amazing layout editor that I enjoyed a lot. As you can see on the screenshot below, this editor allow you to create content and visually organize them.
You can define many properties for each content block : Fluid or fixed layout, sizes, alignments, and so on. Predefined contents (RSS box, Twitter links…) are also available.

Color editor
With most WordPress themes, changing colors is often a painful action, mostly because the theme heavily relies on images. Even when it doesn’t, you have to know CSS to customize a theme.
If you don’t know CSS but still want to have an unique WordPress theme, you’ll probably enjoy Headway because of its color editor. Like the layout editor, this editor allow you to customize every detail of your theme colors without typing a single line of code.

SEO
Search Engine Optimization is definitely one of the most important aspects of any website. While WordPress is pretty well optimized for SEO, a badly coded/optimized theme can definitely ruin your precious search engine rankings.
This problem can be fought using some SEO hacks or a plugin as such as the popular All In One SEO Pack.
But if you’re a happy Headway owner, no need to worry about installing a SEO plugin : By itself, Headway do all what All In One SEO Pack can do.
The XHTML coding of the theme is pretty good and clean, and semantic is respected. This is the key to good SEO, but also to cross-browser compatibility and accessibility support.
Even more options!
In my opinion, using both the layout editor and the color editor, you have the tools to create a stunning and unique website. Though, Headway includes some more handy options.
I really enjoyed the fact that Headway is able to automatically tweet when you publish a blog post. As twitter is probably the most useful tool for blog promotion, this is definitely a good thing.
Another useful thing to mention is the navigation editor. It allow you to visually change your menu items order, choose if you want subpages to be displayed as a drop down menu, and more. Although developers can easily use some WordPress hacks to change menu order, non-developers bloggers will appreciate a theme which have been designed for every user, not for developers only.
Conclusion
Being a part of the WordPress community since 2006, I can honestly say that Headway is one of the most advanced theme framework I ever tried. Beginners and non-tech people will definitely enjoy how easy it is to customize it. Developers don’t have to worry, they’ll be able to “hack” the theme : Many hooks are available in order to supercharge the theme and make it fit your needs.
Compared to Thesis, Headway is easier to customize but have a smaller community due to its most recent release. If you’re hesitating between those two, I’d say that Headway is a better pick for non-tech people. People who are familiar with WordPress should grab Thesis instead.

Thanks for your review and if you think version 1.0 is advanced, wait until you try 1.5.5 Which by the way should be released to the public and out of beta in just days. Drop me an email if you would like to discuss.
@Grant Griffiths : Sounds good! Do you know if people who purchased version 1 will receive a free update?
I didn’t even know about Headway, thanks. Also checked out the video on the website and WOW. It’s like dreamweaver for WordPress
(haven’t used dreamweaver, but people who did said it’s drag&drop and a piece of cake to use).
Thanks,
Great article.
Once you buy Headway, you get lifetime FREE upgrades.
@Grant Griffiths : Thanks for your answer, this is good to know!
Headway seems to be really good, have tested before. Great article Jean-Baptiste Jung as always!
Good review,
Ii didn’t know Headway, it looks like a very useful tool for wordpress
thanks for sharing.
Headway makes the user in me go ‘kyaa~’ over all the nifty settings, but to be honest, the idea of theme frameworks loses some romantic once it is available practically for everyone thanks to all the easy-customization tools.
This whole concept of “Themes” in WordPress is overrated. In my opinion it does not matter what theme one is using till the time it follows basic principals of design :
-Is Clean
-Aids navigation
-Aids legibility
-Good flexibility for incorporating changes
If any theme fits and the author knows his way around the same. That’s the best theme. I myself am using Thesis on my blog and I am happy with the way I can tweak the theme & I am sure Headway is good too.
If a theme works for you, its the best theme!
Vaibhav — Could not agree with you more. There are many themes and each will work best for some and others will work best.
I like your 4 points you make about the basic principals of design and this is something Headway can provide.
The review’s great, and from what I’ve been hearing from everybody- Headway makes for a nice investment. I’d just like to know more though, like for example the Support team as it’s always an important part of any reputable theme company
as an addition, I just went over at Headaway, Themes and I took the tour. Really is amazing
Thumbs up!
I’m a huge WooThemes fan, I love their showcase option where they show potential buyers how their themes have been tweaked. They release high quality free themes in addition to their premium themes. Their pricing format of 1-for-2 is another smart way of selling. Thier portfolio of themes is growing very rapidly. Sorry Jean, but I would go on and on, I’m being patriotic I guess since 2 members of the trio are South African. Love the way Alex Fraiser has pimped his Thesis theme on Blogussion…though I’m surprised to the kind of hype the thesis theme is receiving considering that it’s only one theme.
@Muzi Mohale : I agree with you, WooThemes are great, and there’s nothing wrong with being patriotic, it is a very important value in my opinion.
Though, if you ever get the chance, give a try to Headway and/or Thesis, you might have a good surprise
wonderful theme and nice article!
Liane — The support includes Clay who is the actually developer/designer of Headway.
@Jean-Baptiste Jung: I apologize for writing here, but there is a question for admin. Admin did you get my e-mail? I sent it to you two or three days ago. And I used contact form http://www.catswhoblog.com/contact. Maybe you didn’t get it at all
In my ticket I asked you about interview.
Headway looks great but there is one thing i don’t understand: if i buy the developer license i’ll need to buy additional licenses for each “commercial” project?
Fernando:
That’s how it is right now, but we are getting rid of that policy in the very near future.
I’ve seen Headway banners all over but never really checked it out. But after reading this review I think I will look at it more closely.
I’ve never even heard of Headway. It seems interesting, though. I might check it out, but it’s pretty expensive for my needs. :/
Good review!
It´s an interesting development with the more advanced theme frameworks surfacing. If you would be interested in reviewing, here are a couple apart from Thesis and Headway that you could categorize as more advanced “frameworks” rather than just themes:
Ashford, Carrington, Thematic, Hybrid, WP framework, Whiteboard, Sandbox, Buffet, etc.
What worries me most though is whether they will be compatible with the future development of WordPress and that they get a sufficient user base.
I am running Thesis and one of the things that made me buy the concept is how smart it´s built with all of the customizations in just 2 files. Easy to upgrade when there are new versions of Thesis coming out as well as new versions of WordPress. Any thoughts on Headway in this regard?
On the negative side of Thesis, I think the support via the forum is kinda slow and unresponsive. At least from what you could expect from a bought WP framework with a quite big user base. At least that is my personal impression. Apart from that, I am really happy with it.
I have now switched to headway and I am a HW Junkie!
I love it and the ease of use from not knowing much about it. I am glad I switched!
ooops. ps. I love your Cats Who Blog logo and favicon!!
I’m still using Thesis so I’m not planning to move to Headway, since I’ve already paid for $187 last year. There’s also an upcoming Thesis 2.0 so might be wise to wait before making any drastic change
Besides, I already fall in love with my Thesis powered blog
Ok so I’m a little late to the post! I just discovered Headway the other day and I found this site while searching for opinions on Headway.
It appears to be an excellent theme framework. I still haven’t made up my mind between Headway and another theme…no not Thesis!
Thanks for the write up.
Very helpful!
